Happy Ayden's Birthday!

Ayden is 6 years old today!

There are those who frown upon being too loving towards one's pets. But Ayden... Ayden is a precious thing indeed. He is such a laidback wolf, you'd think he was selected by Providence herself to be our companion.

After 6 years with this amazing animal there are things we've learnt:

1) BROOMS ARE SCARY
2) HOOVERS ARE SCARY
3) PEOPLE WAVING THEIR ARMS ARE SCARY
4) No cuddles please, we're Ayden.
5) Chicken can be sensed at a distance of 4 - 5 kms
6) DID WE MENTION BROOMS? BROOMS ARE THE WORST.

I love this big bundle of fluff.

Ayden The Tamaskan Turns 3!

Today is Ayden's birthday! 3 years old and still looking wolfy. I think he is one of the best purchases we've ever made, and has brought so much happiness into our lives. Here are just a few of my favourite Ayden photos.

A New Cat In Our Life

Yesterday we (Jim, Ian, Ayden and I) awoke early for what would be a very long day. After dropping Ayden off at New Romney with Chris and then dropping Ian home in Hemel Hempstead Jim and I headed up north to Preston. Our mission was to collect the latest addition to our household: Jefferson the Maine Coon.

Our mission was going very well until Keele service station when we got stuck behind a wide load leading to an hour and a half of traffic jams. It was unpleasant but we got to Preston just a little after 1pm. Jefferson's breeders had a house choke full of extremely beautiful and friendly Maine Coon's. Whilst he attempt to hide behind a sofa we made a fuss of his delightful Mum. When we moved to another room to see his Dad (a very handsome fellow), his Mum followed us, jumped up on a cat tree and gave me a quick swat on the back insisting I return to stroking her chin!

Jefferson was in the cat carrier without any issue and we headed home. He meowed for about 5 minutes before becoming the most well-behaved kitten or cat I've ever had in a car! He was an absolute angel.

We stopped off at Mum's, Jefferson escaped and hid under a cabinet then we collected an unsuspecting Ayden from Chris'. Stopped off at the Golden Bowl in Hythe for a takeaway then we headed home. Tired and exhausted we stayed up a little while to keep an eye on an extremely nervous Jefferson!

This morning I came down and though he remained extremely wary he had used his litter tray (an awesome cat, I'm telling you!) He agreed to a few belly rubs on the sofa so I think he is coming round. His purring is tremendous!!!

Ayden is being very good around him but Jefferson is not so sure about Ayden. I'm sure he'll grow to tolerate him in time.

Nearly 10 years since I left my home and my Angel cat (who at 15 is still pottering around Lympne flitting between families!). Finally, I have a cat again. Or a cat has me anyway.

Ayden The Tamaskan

At the beginning of April, a new character was welcomed into our family. Not without some second thoughts, we decided to get a dog. And not just any dog, but a Tamaskan. He was bought from a breeder in Bulgaria, and arrived with us at 12 weeks old. His official name is the grand sounding Saxon Midzor but he's happy to be known as Ayden.

It's taken a bit of adjustment, taking him for regular walks is alright except for when it's dark and rainy and you just want to be in bed already. But he's gorgeous, well-tempered, playful, intelligent and easy to train. And he doesn't eat Mr Gibbs the Bearded Dragon which is also a huge bonus obviously! (Mr Gibbs, as if it needed stating, is ambivalent on this new addition. As long as it doesn't affect the wax-worm supply, anything goes!)

And with a dog comes that great excuse to start exploring, walks through country parks, forests and on the beach are just the beginning. I've already seen a grass snake and tadpoles on our adventures which takes me back to be a child walking our dogs in Snodland's "pit". It's refreshing. Not to be outdone, my Mum has only gone and got herself a Tamaskan!  He's called Finn and, although a few weeks younger than Ayden, is firm friends with his cousin!

Pecularlatities And Fly Traps

OK... I have this thing. I tend to pull down the blinds in the kitchen when I'm in there. It drives Jim absolutely crazy as I tend to forget to put them up again. Well this came back to bite me in the bum the other day when, whilst I was at work, the blinds had blown inwards and pushed Nuf the Venus Fly Trap off the windowsill and into a half full sink.

When I got home she was covered in quinoa, and looked very poorly. I repotted her, gave her a quick wash with deionised water and put her back on the windowsill. Thankfully, today I found her looking a lot better and seemingly thriving again with even more traps on their way.

Fingers crossed that keeps up!!

Poor Gibbs the Bearded Dragon was shedding his skin today and being driven slightly potty by it. He ran around his vivarium, rubbing his back on every object he could find. Finally it came off and he celebrated by requesting to be let out and perching on his little stand by the window so he could watch the world go by. He is an absolutely diamond pet. I recommend everyone gets a Gibbs!!

To The Pets Of Old: Millie Cat

By the time I was 10 Mum and I, through a series of misadventures, found ourselves living in a former monastery in Sellindge. For the first time in memory we had no pets. We began working on my step dad Tony immediately, nagging, begging and moaning to be allowed a cat. He lasted a couple of months, but even he had to give in under our relentless barrage. Luckily (yeah, totally unplanned) at the moment he relented my auntie Melly's cat Sophie's kittens were ready to be rehomed and we went and collected our black and white kitten and brought her to her new place.

Millie's full name was Millie Wall P***** (my parents surname) after my stepdads favourite football team, in consideration of the fact he had allowed us to get her.

Millie was never a real kitten. She was always rather reserved, quiet and unobtrusive. If she didn't want food, she didn't want a fuss. Millie and I were thus soul mates from the get go. She was never a lap cat, nor, until competition arrived, bothered with sleeping on the bed; instead she enjoyed lying on the top of the couch, just behind my head where she could be close but not too close. She also loved lying on the top of the kitchen wall units surveying her realm and harboured a deep and never ending desire for salmon.

She acquired her taste for salmon from the fact that every Christmas my step grandad would send us a hamper. Included inside was a large salmon, and we just weren't too enamoured with it. Not thinking correctly we gave it to the cat (not all at once of course!). This was a very foolish mistake. From then on she refused to eat anything else if there was a Christmas tree up in the house. Weird, I know, but as soon as the Christmas tree was up, it was salmon or NOTHING. She was a particular fussy eater and not shy about informing you through dirty looks when she disapproved of something presented to her.

She had one set of kittens, 2 of whom became my Great Aunt Joy's beloved companions Annie and Chloe, who have become giant and over pampered cats who defy the laws of nature and continue to stalk Snodland at the grand old age of nearly 16.

When we got Angel Cat, Millie threw a hissy fit and left the house. Despite posters and searches she didn't turn up for two weeks. When she did turn up it was by sneaking back into the house, giving an inquisitive Angel a paw round the ear and then settling in to her usual place behind my head on the sofa. Angel would spend the rest of Millie's life desperately trying to be friends whilst Millie would spend it growling menacingly whenever Angel approached.

After Angel arrived Millie began a small war for my affections which got to the point of Angel and her fighting over who was sleeping on my bed. This fight would eventually end with them both doing so on either side of me so I couldn't move an inch.

Sadly Millie died in 2005 after I moved away from home. My most abiding memory of her will always be her endless ability to get fed. She must have eaten six times a day. Mum would wake up and Millie would meow at her for food and get it. Mum would go to work, and then I'd wake up. Millie would meow at me as if she hadn't been fed and I'd moan about Mum being cruel and leaving her hungry as I fed her. I'd head off for school and then my step dad would wake up and the same thing would happen again. She'd do the same in the evening. It took us a long time to realise what she was up to. Sneaky little thing.

To Millie. With Love.

Four Days Off With Jim And Gibbs

Being a bit skinty poos (as Jim would say) we've had a very quiet weekend, if slightly longer than usual due to my flexitime and holiday. Which hasn't been a bad thing, I've managed to do a few posts for Moonlight Investigation and even a few saved up so I can keep that blog going along a little better. Rushing those posts is just not possible, as I've found out.

Gibbs the Bearded Dragon is doing well, looking amazingly gorgeous and cute no matter what. Just look at him and tell me he isn't delightful?

You know, I've had all manner of pets before including tortoises and an American Bullfrog but I never thought I'd get a lizard AND think he was actually very adorable. It's not that I've ever disliked lizards, but that from my experience of wild ones, when I was younger and messing around in the Pit in Snodland, I've always felt them to be somewhat emotionless and cold which is very much not the case!!

Oh and it would seem the scriptwriters are at least considering putting Khan in Star Trek 12. NOOOOOOOOO... don't do it. Please God do something original. It's great Star Trek has been rebooted but don't then follow the same path. Let's have some new adventures!!

Boris The Bearded Dragon: The First Pictures

Jim has taken the first few pictures of the newest addition to our family. His name is Boris and he's a fearsome dragon. Awww....

Boris The Bearded Dragon

So ever since we saw the Bearded Dragons at Pets At Home last week, Jim has been pretty much obsessed. Last night we had our mini adventure to Essex to get a vivarium. So today it was hardly surprising that this morning we found ourselves in Charlton Reptiles purchasing all the associated paraphernalia and one bearded dragon.

We've named him Boris and after some fiddling around he is set up in a rather wonderful vivarium where I oft neglected aquarium sat. And he is sooooo cute. Pictures I'm sure will follow.
